Karen and Phil previously owned The Green Room restaurant in nearby Hexham.
The Green Room was an intimate open kitchen restaurant located in the former luggage office at Hexham Railway station. With Phil running the kitchen single handedly and Karen looking after front of house, the restaurant acheived Michelin status within a few months of opening in 2003.
Since taking over The Rat in late 2007 they have continued with their reputation for quality, whilst still retaining the personal touch.
With Phil in the kitchen and Karen running front of house, the pub has achieved recognition in many guides including Michelin,Good Food Guide and Hardens and is currently ranked number 14 in the Budweiser Budvar Top 50 gastropubs 2018.
